e2 Businesses - Steps to Certification

  1. Complete the e2 Business Application

  • Fill out the e2 Business Application form.

  • Collect data on the amount of energy and other resources that your business consumed in the last calendar year, and report this baseline information in Sections 2 and 3 of the application.

  • Establish meaningful, quantifiable goals for improvement during this calendar year (or next calendar year if you are applying after September 30). List these goals, and some of the associated tasks you will complete to support those goals, in Section 4 of the application. You may want to use the Self Assessment Checklist to help you think about your operations and identify opportunities to save energy, resources, and money.

  • Submit your completed application to the e2 Business Program.

  • Meet with a City representative to go over your application. This may include a site visit to see your operation and better understand your operation and goals for improving your economic and environmental sustainability.

  • Satisfactory completion of these steps earns you initial certification, a certificate from the Mayor, an e2 Business window decal, recognition on the City’s SLCGreen website, inclusion in e2 Business advertising purchased by the City, and reduced advertising rates offered by Catalyst Magazine and the Re-Direct Guide.

  1. Work toward meeting your Economic and Environmental Sustainability (e2) Goals

  • Monitor the quantities of energy and other resources you consume each month, and the amount of waste you produce.

  • Evaluate your progress toward the goals you established, and adjust your strategies as needed to meet your goals for the calendar year.

  1. Maintain Certification

  • At the end of each year, complete the Annual Report form to record how well you met your goals for the year.

  • Establish new goals for the new calendar year, and include those on the Annual Report.

  • Submit your Annual Report to the e2 Business program no later than January 31 each year in order to be listed in the Re-Direct Guide, and on the City’s website and other purchased advertising as an e2 Business for that year.
